Steps on Broadway teeming with activities this summer

Every summer, Steps on Broadway bustles with an extra dose of enthusiastic activity, with people waking up with Morning Fit exercises, dashing to class for Summer Study NYC, trying out the introductory adult dance workshops, deepening their technique with various training programs, gaining certification with teacher workshops or enjoying week-long masterclass series with leading choreographers.

As part of this hustle and bustle, the popular training center offers its annual Steps with Contemporary Masters Series. This summer, the series of one-week workshops kicked off June 13 and runs through September 2. Dancers have already had the opportunity to study under Take Ueyama, Helen Pickett, Jacqulyn Buglisi and Donald Byrd. Upcoming workshops will feature Jennifer Muller, Andrea Miller, Elisa Monte, Stephen Petronio, Francesca Harper, Sidra Bell and Jon Ole Olstad.

In addition, a handful of these choreographers are holding auditions at the end of their workshops for their own troupes and projects. Jennifer Muller, an influence in the dance world for over 40 years, will host an audition for her troupe, The Works, on Friday, July 15, from 4:30-6:30 pm. Since its inception in 1974, The Works has toured to 39 countries on four continents, 30 states and produced 22 NYC seasons at The Joyce, City Center and the New Victory Theaters, among others. Muller has created over 100 works, including seven full-length productions.

Elisa Monte will also host auditions on Saturday, July 30, from 1-3 pm. Her personal repertoire includes such renowned pieces as Dreamtime, Run to the Rock, Light Lies, and Pigs and Fishes, originally commissioned by Alvin Ailey. Speaking about Steps, Co-Artistic Director/Managing Director Diane Grumet, Patricia Klausner, the director of marketing and special events for Steps, said, “Diane created this program over 20 years ago, and we do it every summer. It is great for dancers to take a week of masterclasses with all these choreographers who have their own company and then possibly audition at the end of the week.”

Plus, another professional audition is coming up at Steps. The Steps Repertory Ensemble will host auditions on Sunday, August 14, from 5-8 pm. Artistic Director Bradley Shelver seeks male and female dancers for immediate hire. They must be strong in ballet and contemporary aesthetics with good partnering skills.

This audition will consist of a class followed by repertory. It costs $15. To apply, send along a headshot, resume and copy of receipt to Production@stepsnyc.com by Wednesday, August 10. Learn more about the company here.
