New York City Principal Sara Mearns is one of the most popular ballerinas of our time. She is bold, musical, dynamic and glamorous. And her resume doesn’t end with just stage performances. Amidst a very busy schedule, including touring around the world, Mearns also teaches guest classes and has even collaborated with Só Dança for another new, very beautifully daring collection of leotards, leggings, tops and bottoms, and warmup gear.

This Monday, July 9, at NYC’s famed Broadway Dance Center, Mearns will lead a 90-minute ballet class, followed by a sneak peek of this new 2018 Só Dança Sara Mearns Collection, with select items to be on sale during the event and in the Shop at BDC.

Of this summer’s hot collection, Mearns says that it’s “very exciting and very edgy. We’ve added some shimmer elements, along with details that have the look of leather. I definitely wanted young ladies to feel strong and confident in these pieces, so I felt this would definitely compliment that feeling. I also have some silhouettes in this collection that I’ve never tried or even worn myself, and I wanted to challenge myself to wear more creative, edgy designs.”

Mearns describes these new dance items as a continuation of her own street fashion. “I was definitely inspired by pieces I have worn in the past that I wanted to bring to the next level,” she says. “I was also inspired by clothing I have in my own closet at home. I wanted to show that I have many sides to my personality, and it can come out in my designs.”

The prima ballerina says she is beyond grateful to be collaborating with Só Dança in making these designs come to life. “I still pinch myself every day when I wear either my leggings or leotards,” Mearns reveals. “I love seeing what’s possible, and seeing how far we can stretch the boundaries with the designs. There is something incredibly beautiful about classic and chic, but I also think it’s so powerful to turn classic on its its head!”

For Mearns, these new designs mean more than just cut, style and color. She also hopes that all dancers – from young students to professionals – can find confidence in wearing her beautiful, flattering dancewear items.

“Any outfit or costume you put on, when you feel beautiful and strong, you immediate stand up taller and start to shine, even if you don’t realize it yourself,” she says. “I get that feeling every time I put my Diamonds tutu on. I immediately become the ballerina I always dreamed of being. I want that for the dancers who wear my leotards. It might not be a tutu, but it’s a form of costume that you will dance your best self in.”

At the upcoming BDC Sara Mearns Master Class & Só Dança Collection Reveal, Mearns will offer a class that’s similar to the one she gives herself every day – one that is comprised of different combinations she has collected from different teachers over the years. She describes it as “not too complicated”, as she feels simplicity is key. In addition, Mearns will discuss stage presence and how to hold yourself as if you were standing center stage, even in the classroom.

Mearns says she’s excited to be teaching at an iconic establishment such as BDC and to show dancers the new Só Dança collection.

“Só Dança is a family unit,” she shares. “All aspects of the company are run by the family, and it’s wonderful. I remember the first shoot we did last year, and it was like a huge family reunion that I was sort of being inducted into. They are so passionate about their company and that they came from nothing and created this beautiful company! I like that if I need anything at any time, they are always there to help or guide me. And lastly, it’s about the quality of their products, and not how much money they can make on mediocre products. It’s the best of nothing at all. I am so thankful and grateful to them for taking me on this journey that will be for a long time to come!”

The Sara Mearns Master Class & Só Dança Collection Reveal will be held this Monday, July 9, 10am-12pm, at Broadway Dance Center. To register, visit www.broadwaydancecenter.com/master-class/sara-mearns-master-class-só-dança-collection-reveal.
