The Charleston Ballet has announced its 2026–2027 season, marking the company’s 71st year with a lineup that generates offerings of Appalachian lore, holiday tradition, and innovative artistic collaboration. A.I.: Artistic Impact reflects the company’s commitment to exploring the intersection of creativity, technology, and dance while celebrating the artistry that has defined The Charleston Ballet for more than seven decades.
The season opens October 23–24, 2026, 7:30 pm, at the WV Culture Center with the world premiere of The Legend of Mothman, an original ballet inspired by one of West Virginia’s most enduring mysteries. Choreographed by K.R. Pauley, the production combines dance, the innovative projection technology of Carol and Mike DelGrosso, an innovative story by Deborah Novak, and a unique score by composer Matt Jackfert to bring the legendary Appalachian cryptid to the stage.
The company’s annual production of The Nutcracker returns December 11, 2026, 7:30 pm and December 12, 2026, 1:00 pm & 7:30 pm, at the Clay Center, accompanied by live music from the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. A holiday tradition for audiences across the region, the production follows Clara on her magical Christmas Eve journey through the Land of Sweets, featuring Tchaikovsky’s beloved score and elaborate costumes and scenery, creating unforgettable memories for audiences of all ages.
The season concludes on March 12–13, 2027, at 7:30 pm, with Creative Synergy at the WV Culture Center. The mixed-bill performance showcases the company’s versatility through both classical and contemporary works, including Glazunov’s The Seasons and the return of Red/Blue, choreographed by Deborah Novak. Incorporating projection design and contemporary theatrical elements, the evening explores how technology and traditional performance can complement one another while highlighting the expressive power of dance.
The theme, A.I.: Artistic Impact, emphasizes the role of innovation in the performing arts while underlining that creativity remains rooted in the artists themselves. Through original works, enduring classics, and collaborative artistic experiences, the season celebrates how imagination and passion continue to shape the future of dance. The 2026–2027 season continues that legacy by embracing new ideas while celebrating the timeless power of tradition.
