The National Center for Choreography-Akron (NCCAkron) has launched the sixth season of Inside the Dancer’s Studio, a podcast that brings listeners into the process of creating dance. Through interviews with choreographers from across the United States, Inside the Dancer’s Studio breaks down the mystery of dance-making into engaging, fun, and deeply human conversations about what moves artists to express their truths through creation and performance.

New episodes are released each Friday on most streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Artists featured in Season 6 include Leila and Noelle Awadallah of Body Watani (Minneapolis, MN), Shaina and Bryan Baira of BAIRA MVMNT PHLOSPHY (Detroit, MI), Joe Bowie (Evanston, IL), Kara Jenelle (Los Angeles, CA), David Roussève (West Hollywood, CA), George Staib (Atlanta, GA), and Reggie Wilson (Brooklyn, NY).

The podcast’s host, NCCAkron Executive/Artistic Director Christy Bolingbroke, poses a series of questions about craft, process, and perseverance to each interviewee, including: how do they name a piece? What do they look for in collaborators? What do they do if they find themselves stuck, creatively?

Each episode was recorded as part of a conversation series presented by NCCAkron, with support from The University of Akron. These short talks are perfect for dancers, dancemakers, creatives, or anyone who has ever built something from scratch.

This new season will also feature two bonus episodes. Inside the Dancer’s Studio: Live! – Obsessed with Light, with the cohort of Dancing Lab: Immersive Spaces & Alternate Places. Artists Raphael Xavier (Philadelphia, PA), Art Bridgman and Myrna Packer of Bridgman|Packer Dance (Valley Cottage, NY), and Hanna Ali (Miami, FL) gathered together with their technical collaborators to reflect on how they incorporate technology in their creative practice.

Dancing Conversation: Generational Exchange is a panel discussion across three generations of dancemakers who participated in Dancing Lab: Intergenerational Partners, where they reflect on longevity in dance. Artist pairs include Dianne McIntyre (Cleveland, OH) with Tiffany Rea-Fisher (New York, NY), Donald Byrd (Seattle, WA) with Nia-Amina Minor (Seattle, WA), and Donna Uchizono (New York, NY) with Kristel Baldoz (Queens, NY).

“I’m delighted to share these new episodes,” says Bolingbroke. “NCCAkron’s work and research with these artists reflect the general workforce regardless of sector. Highlighting the artistic stories and voices of today includes up to five generations of artists navigating the world within which we all live.”
