Mandala South Asian Performing Arts, which connects audiences with the vibrancy, flavors, and colors of South Asia’s performing arts traditions, presents Nature and Narratives, an immersive production featuring acclaimed artists from India, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Japan. The performance will take place Sunday, September 20 at 4 p.m. at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster Street, Naperville.
Inspired by the human connection to earth and nature, Nature and Narratives brings together rare traditional instruments, movement, and storytelling to explore themes of nature, memory, migration, and belonging. The immersive performance features Chicago-area-based artists, including Indian Classical musician, multi-instrumentalist, bansurist, and vocalist Chethan Anant; master Balinese dancer, choreographer, and percussionist I Gusti Kertayudha Ngurah (Pak Ngurah), who specializes in gamelan; South Asian percussionist Chamni Sripraram, who has performed across the U.S. and Thailand at cultural and educational institutions; and Tzu-Tsen Wu, a plucked-string multi-instrumentalist whose style is shaped by her Taiwanese roots and experience across world music, Western jazz, and classical ensembles.
Joining the musicians is solo dancer Raji Venkat, who recently joined Mandala Arts as associate artistic director alongside Artistic Executive Director Pranita Nayar and Associate Executive Director Hiteshree Das.
Tickets for Nature and Narratives are $35, with patron seating available for $50. The performance takes place Sunday, September 20 at 4 p.m. at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster Street, Naperville. Tickets are available at mandalaarts.org.
Founded by Artistic Director Pranita Nayar, Mandala South Asian Performing Arts has earned major support from the Joyce Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. From classical to contemporary, Mandala connects audiences and students with the vibrancy of South Asia’s performing arts traditions through engagement with specialized artists and educators representing diverse ethnic, geographical, linguistic, cultural, and gender identities.
