She Dances, a heartfelt indie drama starring Steve Zahn and his daughter Audrey Zahn, was released nationwide in theaters on March 27. The film premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Festival, and is directed by Rick Gomez in his directorial debut, with a screenplay by Gomez and Steve Zahn. It also stars Ethan Hawke, Sonequa Martin-Green, Mackenzie Ziegler and Rosemarie DeWitt.
She Dances follows struggling father Jason (Steve Zahn) trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter Claire (played by his real-life daughter), while serving as her chaperone during a high-stakes regional dance competition in the southeast. As they deal with the high-pressure “dance moms” world, competitive teenage dancers and more, the father and daughter duo bond as they face a past family tragedy.
The film is heavily based on the real-life experiences of Steve and Audrey Zahn, and was inspired by their real journey through the competitive dance world. It was written during the COVID pandemic and lockdown.
Audrey is not the only cast member who returned to dance for the production of She Dances. Fellow cast member Mackenzie Ziegler was on Dance Moms for six seasons, until May 2016, when she left the show with sister Maddie to pursue other projects. Since then, she has collaborated with Sia on multiple music videos, has released multiple studio albums, and has appeared on other TV series such as Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn.
She Dances is now playing in U.S. theaters. Check your local theaters for showtimes.
