Dance the Magic has announced that the incredible Emmy Award–winning choreographer and creative director Wade Robson will be part of the company’s 25th anniversary celebration this summer in Hawaii. Known for creating magical experiences for dancers from around the world, Dance the Magic has planned a special retreat in paradise taking place July 26-31, at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa.

Along with a curated itinerary including a production performance, private luau, character meet and greet, and island activities, Robson will host two powerful sessions: Meditation & Movement for the dancers, and a seminar called “The Support They Need” for dance parents and studio owners, focusing on supporting dancers’ emotional and mental wellbeing throughout their dance journeys.

Dance Informa caught up with President and Founder of Dance the Magic, Debi Barr, to gain insight into Robson joining this exciting retreat.

The announcement that Wade Robson will be part of the retreat is exciting! How did this collaboration come about?

“Looking back over the years, there has always been a passion and drive to provide unexpected, magical opportunities to dancers and dance studios across the world. During the celebration of Dance the Magic, we also wanted to focus on the inner journey of the individual directors, teachers and dancers to help them reconnect with their purpose. Our team of industry professionals have worked alongside and connected with Wade. He has created a program to guide dancers from pressure to purpose, allowing dance to be a source of joy and self-expression. What better collaboration to start the process of learning, growing and rejuvenation!”

In what ways will this 25th anniversary Hawaiian Retreat at Aulani feel different from other Dance the Magic events?

“Celebrating 25 years of Dance the Magic is an amazing opportunity that we wanted to share with all our studio friends who have supported us along the way. This is more than a performance opportunity; it is also a celebration of the success Dance the Magic has brought to many studios over the years. We have a special Hall of Fame Award presentation planned as well as a moment to focus on giving back to the dance industry. This will be a year of gratitude, and at Aulani we plan to honor our Foundation of Choice – Dancers Against Cancer.”

What opportunities will dancers have to learn from or interact with Wade Robson and other dance industry professionals during the retreat?

“Wade Robson will lead a meditation and movement workshop for our dancers and directors, and will also connect with families during our ‘Support They Need’ seminar. Additionally, he will join the Aloha celebration party. Katy Tate and Tiffany Maher bring extensive professional dance and choreography backgrounds, offering inspiring workshops focusing on contemporary and jazz styles.

Our Hawaiian Retreat includes a mock audition workshop led by Alan Collins, who shares over 20 years of experience at the Disney Parks. For studio owners, Julie Kay Stallcup will provide insights as a business and life coach, motivational speaker, and dance educator.

We have also designed clinician panels, Q&A sessions, and workshops to foster meaningful connections between our guests, these talented educators, and our amazing studio owners.”

Twenty-five years is an amazing achievement. Over the years, how have you seen the Dance the Magic community grow or change?

“Dance the Magic has grown significantly, expanding from performances at Disney to opportunities at Walt Disney World, the Grand Ole Opry, Broadway, and now Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa. We have implemented new technology to streamline our registration and hotel booking processes to make them seamless. As we’ve expanded, we have also grown our team to maintain that personal touch. Our staff is made up of current and previous performers who share a passion for giving back and supporting the next generation of dancers.”

Dance the Magic events often bring together dancers from many different studios and backgrounds. What impact does that diversity have on the experience?

“In today’s world, the positive impact that diversity and inclusion have on our dancers is incredibly valuable. We are proud to host dancers from Australia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Malta, Brazil, Bermuda, Canada, Panama and Japan, among many others.

Dance the Magic has long been a member of the Student Youth Travel Association. We also participate in the Peace through Tourism program to encourage kindness, acceptance and positivity through travel. By encouraging our guests to learn and perform with a common goal, we can positively shape how dancers grow and communicate with others.”

What do studio owners, dancers and dance families gain from spending several days immersed in a retreat environment rather than attending a shorter dance workshop?

“Spending several days in a retreat environment allows studio owners, dancers and dance families to step away from the fast pace of studio life, and into the Aloha spirit of Aulani. Whether it’s relaxing poolside, creating Mickey Ears, or cheering during our celebratory cocktail hour, we plan to celebrate the dance community through shared experiences. There are so many opportunities to recharge and build stronger relationships so participants can return home with renewed energy, creativity, and a deeper sense of purpose.”

Are there any moments or experiences that tend to become especially memorable for dancers?

“We have been fortunate to create so many unforgettable experiences for our dancers! From dancing down Main Street U.S.A. in front of thousands of Disney Park guests to exploring new destinations VIP-style, these moments are truly unforgettable.

Our events offer unique opportunities for teams to travel together and exchange friendship bracelets with dancers from around the world. Guests can enjoy private parties in the parks with treats, rides, and character meet and greets with very little lines. It is equally magical for Studio Directors and family members to enjoy the VIP party, and to watch their dancers perform as professionals on the brightest stages from Disney to the Grand Ole Opry. These memories last a lifetime!”
