You’re backtage, and it’s almost time to go onstage for your solo. The dance calls for some crazy, hot pink lashes; or maybe you just need to apply a regular last strip to stand out under the lights.
Panic…sweaty palms, the lashes fall to the ground….you can’t find the lash strip…they don’t stick and are poking your daughter’s eyes.
Sound familiar?
We’ve got a simple, step-by-step guide below to help you apply your competition lashes with ease. And moms – we’ll even show you how to apply some on yourself that look natural and give you a little glam. (Yes, you’ve still got it!)
First, start applying your makeup as usual. We love referring to our 5-step makeup routine for any makeup application, whether you are applying makeup for everyday or for competition.
Step 1: Face
Start by applying your foundation, concealer and powder. For stage/performance makeup, you want to start with a more matte foundation. Then apply concealer only where you need it. Don’t forget to apply foundation or an eye primer to the lid so that your shadow stays all day.
Next, set it with a little translucent powder. Important…on eyes, your makeup creases. Be sure to tap out any creases on the lid, then lightly powder right away. And tap out any creases under the eye, then powder lightly there as well.
Now you’re ready for eyes!
Step 2: Eyes
Apply your eye shadow first. Make sure you do a thin layer of liner before you apply lashes.
Now it’s lash time! You’ve got this!
First, size the lash to your eye or your daughter’s eye – cutting off the longest size to size it. (For everyday use, I love Ardell #110 – cut in half and applied to the outer corner of the lash line – trim the fake lash if it’s too long for the most natural look.)
My all-time favorite tool for applying lashes is the lash clip. NOT a tweezer. The tweezer requires too much coordination, keeping it held shut, holding the lash while trying to place it just right on your lid.
Instead, grab our lash clip…and here we go:
1. Measure your false lash and trim any excess.
2. Put a little duo lash glue on your hand and let it start to dry a little.
3. Place the lash in the lash clip. If using a half lash, place lashes on the outer corner of the lash clip so you apply to the outer corner of your eye.
4. Apply a THIN layer of lash glue to your lash using the back of a makeup brush.
5. Slide the false lash right up your real lashes so they apply as close to the lashes as possible.
6. Grab one of those tiny fans on Amazon and use it to dry lashes and lips.
7. Then apply another coat of liner on top of the false lashes to hide the glue and lash line. I love powder/shadow as liner, but you can use a gel liner or liquid.
8. Last, apply a generous coat of mascara to blend your real lashes in with the false lashes.
Brush off any shadow that may have fallen on your cheekbones – or use a small square makeup remover cloth to buff it off gently. (We have these on our Amazon favs page here.)
Step 3: Cheeks
Now it’s time to finish your look.
Apply your desired blush color on cheeks – think of applying along an imaginary line from the bottom of your nose to the top of your ear. I also like to apply a little bit of blush or contour to the hair line on the side of the face for competition.
Step 4: Lips
We could do an entire tutorial on how to apply lip color for competition. Our most important tips are:
1. Start with a completely dry, product-free lip.
2. Smile – then apply. This gets your lip color in all the cracks of your lip.
3. Don’t forget the outer corners.
4. Apply a little liner if desired to perfect that lip line.
5. Dust with a little translucent powder to set it.
Step 5: Highlights
You’re all over this trend – apply in a “c” shape around eyes/on top of cheekbones, to brow bone, upper lip and collar bones.

See, makeup really is simple, as are false lashes. My last piece of makeup advice: grab a buddy if you’re older, or your mom to apply for you!
