Rhys Bobridge Speaks with Dance Informa

Congratulations on becoming one of Australia’s Top 4 dancers!
Tell us about the journey and experience – the highs and the lows of SYTYCD.

The high has been excelling in genres that I would never normally apply myself to.

The low has been being emotionally and physically drained.

What has been your biggest challenge in the competition so far?
Being able to convincingly portray a style and believing in my own abilities.

What have you learnt from the SYTYCD experience?
What haven’t I learnt?! Most importantly, that I’m capable of pretty much anything.

Have you been surprised by your success in the competition?
Yes, I didn’t think Australia was ready for this jelly! It feels wonderful to be so well received.

What has been your favourite dance piece and why?
Dance Hall/Hip Hop with Jemma choreographed by Tiana. So much fun, a style I’ve always wanted to learn and a little controversial.

Who has been your favourite choreographer to work with and why?

Rhys, So You Think You Can Dance

Jason Gilkison, what a star. I love his method of teaching. He makes
you believe that your performance is an extension of your own emotion. He is also a really funny guy.
I love to call him my friend.

Have you been surprised by the audience vote?
Sometimes. Dancers have left that I thought deserved to stay, but at this stage I’m not complaining!

Have you always agreed with the judges’ decisions?
Mostly. I take Jason’s word as gospel, but even he can get it wrong sometimes!

What is your biggest strength? What do you think could give you the edge to win?
My personality and passion to perform. I think I have a great ability to connect with an audience, be it live or through the television.

If you win SYTYCD Australia, what are your plans for the cash prize and USA trip?
I’d like to buy a pad because renting sucks, and continue travelling. I think I’ll be wise and do some investing.

Where will we see you in 5 years, win or lose?
Who can say? Hopefully still performing with a world’s more experience under my belt. I’m not ruling anything out. I’ll give anything a bash, as long as it’s creative and fabulous.

Watch this Sunday night to see if Rhys wins...
