QLD Ballet Celebrates 10yrs with Klaus

2008 is a huge year for Queensland Ballet with a program of seven works, an international tour to Japan, and two regional tours. Celebrating the tenth anniversary of his appointment as Artistic Director in 2008, François Klaus has created a program that features two new full-length productions in addition to the popular annual events that showcase the Company’s versatility, strong technique and fresh, youthful style.

In March 2008, Queensland Ballet will present a new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, marking a much-anticipated return collaboration with The Queensland Orchestra. With choreography by François Klaus, sets by Graham Maclean and costumes by Noelene Hill, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a magical tale of gods and fairies, mischief and misadventures, and the confusing path of true love. Full of action, humour and drama, the lavish production is based on Shakespeare’s play, and set to the famous incidental music of Mendelssohn.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will run from March 1st to 15th at the Playhouse, QPAC.

December sees the Company’s first-ever full-length production of one of the most hauntingly beautiful ballets in the classical repertoire, Swan Lake. Paying homage to its rich choreographic heritage, François Klaus will restage the much-loved masterpiece. Retaining the famous second act in its traditional form, Klaus will re-choreograph Acts 1, 3 and 4, offering a showcase for the brilliance of classical ballet within a strong dramatic line.

The Queensland Orchestra will perform the magnificent music of Tchaikovsky for the production, setting the scene for thrilling ensembles and virtuosic solos. “Presenting these two big new productions is a wonderful means of celebrating my tenth anniversary with the Company,” said François Klaus.

Swan Lake will be performed at the Playhouse QPAC from December 6th to 20th.

Determined to pursue her love, the Little Mermaid makes a bargain with the Sea Witch and forsakes her home beneath the waves to follow her Prince onto the shore. More than a simple fairy tale, this charming and poignant work explores the nature of longing, how making choices may have lasting consequences, and how goodness can be rewarded in unexpected ways.

Guest choreographer Natalie Weir will also create a stunning new dance work. “I’m particularly happy to continue two important relationships in our with attitude 2008 season. William Barton will perform his own composition in a new dance work we are developing together; and Natalie Weir will continue her innovative work with us as guest choreographer,” said François Klaus.
