Emerging Artist Morgan Choice

By Deborah Searle

Morgan Choice is a rising star of Australian Dance.  At just 17 years of age she has already won Showcase Dancer of the Year and competed in America, winning two firsts and a second.  She has won both the Junior and Senior Dance Championships at the City Of Sydney as well as the Global Dance Award at Global Dance Convention and travelled to Edge in LA to study with the industry’s finest. With several television and film clip credits under her belt already, Morgan is ready to take on the dance world!

At the young age of 17, you have already enjoyed some amazing dance opportunities and won many awards and competitions. Tell us about your achievements.

Tell us about your dance experiences in the USA.
Going to America to dance has always been the place I’ve seen myself as a performer, so having the chance to dance in the US was a dream.  My first experience was my solo in the Las Vegas competition, after I had won Dancer of the Year in Australia.  I performed three solos and won two first and a second.  I then went to LA and took classes at the Edge where I had won a scholarship.  I then went to New York and took classes there and also visited the Alvin Ailey School.  The time I spent in both cities was the most inspirational, challenging, hardest and amazing time I have had.  It gave me the drive to want to be the best performer I can be.

What has been your career highlight so far?
The highlight of my career is hard to pinpoint really as I am still very young and my professional career is just starting.  Winning "Global" which entitles me to the return trip to LA, classes and accommodation is fantastic and I am going this year.  Performing at the Australia "Carnival" in 2008 was amazing and gave me so many contacts, including Andre Fuentes who is Britney Spears choreographer.

What is your secret to success?
Focus, I think is the key to my success so far.  Without the focus of becoming the performer I want to be, there is no way I will achieve it.

Where do you train and what is your favourite dance style?
I have trained since the age of three at Brent Street Studios.  In 2008 I graduated from my 1 year full-time course.  I really love all forms of dance and last year discovered a love for Musical Theatre, but if I had to choose my favourite it would be Contemporary, and then Jazz.

What inspired you to start dancing? What inspires you to work so hard at it today?
My dad was a dancer with Alvin Ailey in NY, Joffrey Ballet in NY, ADT in Adelaide Australia, and he also performed with David Atkins - so I guess there was some natural feel for me to dance.  My mum also works in dance as a Publicist.  There are so many people that inspire me to dance and keep me inspired, like Kelley Abbey, La Chanze, Andre Fuentes, Tucka Barkley, Matt Lee, Linda Nagle (my singing

teacher), Caroline O'Connor, Sarah Boulter, Mia Michaels,
Wade Robson, Janet Jackson and Cameron Mitchell - just so many.

If you could work with any artist or Dance Company, who would it be?
At the present time in my life I would absolutely love to work in either the musical "The Color Purple" or on tour with Madonna or Britney.  Although there are times when I think maybe ADT.  I just want to be able to do everything.

Where will we see you in 5 years? What are your goals and aspirations?
Hopefully, in 5 years I will be performing on Broadway and choreographing all over the world in commercial dance.  I hope to be working towards being a success in every aspect of performing.

Look out for Morgan Choice, she is sure to be a star of the Australian dance industry.
