Platform 2 Hip Hop Festival
Set to explode at CarriageWorks, Sydney’s newest arts centre, on March 27th & 28th.
After the success of 2008’s Platform 1, Platform 2 Hip Hop Festival will be back in March 2009 to take over CarriageWorks’ urban jungle with two days of high-powered Hip Hop culture representing Breaking, Graffiti, Beatboxing, MCing and DJing.
Old skooler’s, hip hop novices and everyone in between can get into the vibe of true Australian Hip Hop culture at Platform 2. The Festival runs over 2 days and showcases the unique Australian flavour of our local Hip Hop artists. There will be plenty of demonstrations from the best performers and artists around. If you’re new to Hip Hop you can have a go by taking part in the many free events, activities and workshops open to the public.
Last year, over 2000 people come through the doors to check it out and participate. Building on that success, CarriageWorks will again be transformed into an inner-city Hip Hop playground with a series of activities, workshops and two huge nights of entertainment welcoming everyone – B Boys, B Girls, as well as music fanatics of all kinds (including the kids!).
Over 70 emerging and established artists and performers will be featured. The full program details will be released in early 2009. All tickets will be under $20 and plenty of the events and activities will be free. On sale in early 2009 through www.carriageworks.com.au and

Bangarra Dance Theatre to present True Stories at Laycock Street Theatre.
Internationally recognised as a leading exponent of Indigenous performing arts, Bangarra Dance Theatre kick starts its 2009 season with a thrilling tour of double bill True Stories.
Acclaimed choreographer Frances Rings and dancer-turned-choreographer Elma Kris, together with the dancers of Australia's most dynamic and exciting contemporary dance company, share their true stories with Australian audiences for the first time. Choreographer Frances Rings presents the world premiere of X300. "Essentially the work is about healing. It's a journey back to country - a chance to rejuvenate and heal old wounds."
Dancer and choreographer Elma Kris has created a beautiful new work in her choreographic debut with Bangarra, entitled Emeret Lu, meaning "very old things". Including a special guest appearance by Murray Island descendant Smilar Sinak, Emeret Lu is a brilliant assemblage of traditional and contemporary dance; a celebration of rain, wind, hunting and the little-known Torres Strait Island culture.

The same conditions apply to the second event that caters for boys in the 11 and under age group.
Another change worth noting is that The Australian Ballet may at its discretion offer two one- year scholarships covering tuition and academic costs to entrants in the Robert & Elizabeth Albert Junior Classical Ballet Scholarship who nominate to study at ABS. This incentive was previously offered to finalists in the major McDonald’s Ballet Scholarships.
The Dance of the Champions, introduced in 2008 as part of the Sydney Eisteddfod’s 75th Anniversary celebrations, will be repeated this year. The date has been set for Sunday September 27th and, once again, a selection of prize-winning groups will pit their skills in a spectacular dance-off for $10,000 in prize money and the audience vote. The previous winner is not eligible to compete. Last year this event was a complete sell-out, so to avoid disappointment, book early.
As usual, the Challenge program includes sections for troupes and solo performers of all ages in every style of dance from classical ballet to hip hop. Entries close on March 16th. The Syllabus may be viewed online and you can enter through the Sydney Eisteddfod website. www.sydneyeisteddfod.com.au
