Bloch’s Stylish New Flagship Store
Bloch has opened a stunning flagship store at 117 York Street, Sydney – a new home for Bloch’s industry leading dance apparel and footwear.
After an opening party hosted by the Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, David McAllister AM, and attended by the elite of the dance community, the York Street store is already a hit with loyal Bloch shoppers. The elegant opening party included an informal chat by David McAllister with Australian Ballet principal Danielle Rowe, followed by the special guest of the evening, The Royal Ballet’s Miss Darcey Bussell. To officially open the store Australian Ballet Principal Dancers Robert Curran and Kirsty Martin performed a breathtaking pas de deux from Manon on the mezzanine level, setting a scene of excellence for the dance fashion and footwear superstore.
At 260 square metres, the York Street store is glamorous and more than equipped to service the dance industry. With apparel and the latest footwear styles adorning the walls, it is a dancer’s paradise. As a proud Australian company with a long Sydney tradition, this is a historic move for Bloch. With eighteen spectacular stores across the country, York Street will be the fifth Sydney flagship location for Bloch in a long and successful 76 year history. The Bloch empire now run by brothers David and Simon Wilkenfeld, grandsons of the late Jacob Bloch, has grown into Australia’s leading dance wear brand, with huge demand globally, particularly in the USA and London.
The company’s founder, Jacob Bloch, immigrated to Australia from Lithuania in 1929, and being a cobbler, saw a need for high quality ballet shoes for Australian dancers. In 1932 the first pointe shoes were created. With humble beginnings in a candle lit store in Paddington, Bloch enjoyed such success that it quickly moved to 23 Piccadilly Arcade. Quickly outgrowing this space, the store was moved to 6 Piccadilly Arcade and then in the early seventies it relocated to the first gallery level in the Strand. After a decade, with the need to expand further, the store moved upstairs to the second level where it enjoyed twenty more years of success. Nine years ago Bloch relocated from the Strand to the Skygarden store we all know and love in Pitt Street Mall, which will close early next year, making way for the glorious York Street superstore to continue the tradition of service.
With a classic yet contemporary design, Sandie Windsor-Richards, National Manager of Dance Products and Services, says “This York Street store is the flagship of the company and envelopes the architectural concept of mixing the old traditions with the new 21st century.” Twelve stunning chandeliers hang from the incredibly high ceilings, lighting up a beautiful backdrop of a dancer in full flight at the Paris Opera. If the store itself does not inspire a dancer, the apparel and new ranges of footwear for both the studio and street will.
York Street stocks the full range of all Bloch products including the new seasonal ranges of Mirella, Jozette, the French apparel Wearmoi, Bloch International, and the high performance active Body Softwear and BrasilSul. New release products, include the Evolution jazz sneaker and pointe shoe Amelie which are attracting dancers looking for the latest footwear designs. The store also stocks bags, DVD’s, gifts and accessories.
This year Bloch has launched a range of dazzling ballet flats for street wear, designed by Jozette Hazzouri. These shoes, which ooze style, come in an array of bright patterns, leathers and metallic colours, featuring a unique design approach and blended with the pinnacle of Bloch craftsmanship.
And you can’t look past the adorable range of Baby Bloch ballet slippers for pre-walkers. They are so very tiny with cute designs of spots, daisies, shimmer leathers or shiny patent colours, all beautifully presented in stylish gift boxes.
Bloch is once again setting the standard for dance fashion in Australia, with traditional favourites and modern new ranges in a classic yet contemporary new flagship store. Visit Bloch York Street today!
