The Australian Ballet in 09

The Australian Ballet’s 2009 will feature15 ballets that remain true to the forward-thinking spirit of ballet. There will be six distinct seasons and 156 performances, from full-length ballet classics to contemporary works by major Australian and international choreographers. In 2009 The Australian Ballet will bring to us Firebird and other legends, Nutcracker – The Story of Clara, Bodytorque 2.2, Paris Match, Concord and The Sleeping Beauty. With an extraordinary range of scores by great composers including Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Bizet and Chopin, played by Australia’s best orchestras, 2009 is sure to be a magnificent year for the Ballet.

The company will bring us two new works by the world’s most sought after choreographers, British luminary Wayne McGregor and St Petersburg’s Alexei Ratmansky in Concord. After the success of Graeme Murphy’s Swan Lake this year, Murphy will develop a brand-new interpretation of Firebird. The company will also perform Murphy’s Nutcracker – The Story of Clara, which like Swan Lake, is another Murphy classic. Stanton Welch will share his talents with Australian audiences in his iconic work, Divergence which will feature in Paris Match, and the company will finish the year with his acclaimed version of The Sleeping Beauty.

Bodytorque 2.2 will continue the company’s investment in emerging choreographic artists, presenting new works by Robert Curran, Damien Welch, Simone Pulga, Kevin Jackson, Remi Wörtmeyer and Reed Luplau.

2009 marks the centenary of the debut in the West of Sergei Diaghilev’s trailblazing Ballets Russes. Along with other major international companies, The Australian Ballet will be honouring the influence and achievements of the Ballets

Russes with special programming, as 2009 marks the conclusion of the company’s four-year exploration and celebration of the Ballets Russes.

“The legacy of the Ballets Russes in Australia has been profound, initially in Europe but then globally, owing to their relentless touring schedule. The Colonel de Basil Ballets Russes tours to Australia in the 1930s and 40s really galvanised the worlds of art and music here and were instrumental in kick-starting the thriving arts scene we enjoy today. Paying tribute to them in their centenary year through dance and music will be highly fitting and a great pleasure,” said Artistic Director David McAllister.

To compliment the major company, The Dancers Company will present a Ballets Russes inspired programme regionally, with twenty-one performances in three states: Victoria, Queensland and Northern Territory, engaging more people than ever in regional Australia.

2009 also marks the 25th anniversary of The Australian Ballet’s partnership with Principal Sponsor Telstra. Thank you Telstra for your continued support of this beautiful art form.
