Super Round Box 3 - Break, Hip Hop & Popping Comp

By Kristy Johnson

On September 27th at Bankstown Town Hall I was able to witness the talents of what some would call an ‘underground culture’. Crews within Sydney battled it out under the one roof to claim their prize as a top Bboy, popper or hip hop crew.

As a dancer trained in classical styles of dance I was intrigued to observe the moves of an urban dance community inspired by pioneers including the Electric Boogaloos.

Not only was I thoroughly drawn in to the captivating ambience of the event, cleverly put together by the crew of Hybrid Formz, I was also amazed at the similarities in performance of both classically trained and street trained dancers.

Elements of improvisation, strength, coordination, performance quality and musicality required for a ballet or contemporary artist were observed within the moves of Bboys, poppers and hip hop dancers.

After observing the skills of these artists under the one roof I think it is fair to say that the pioneers of street dance styles would be impressed by the dedication and persistence shown to this art form.

With crews battling it out for the prestigious titles, guest judges including household names Nasty Ray, Kreate and Pepito, motivated the dancers to achieve their peak performance through encouraging words and gestures.

The emergence of dance as an art form requires continuous support from the wider community in order for it to survive and prosper. Supporters of Super Round Box 3 including ozbboy.com and Dancekool are a credit to themselves in ensuring the growth of the street dance world.

Congratulations to Project Manager Khai Ngo and the rest of the Hybrid Formz crew for presenting other crews in Sydney with the opportunity to showcase their unique talents.

Inspired by this showcase of talent, I think I may swap my jazz shoes for a pair of sneakers and immerse myself in to the world of street dance!
