The Australian Ballet School Sets Standard for Dancer Healthcare

In order to maximise ability, it is important for dancers to be healthy in mind and body and to enjoy their dancing. As part of the Australian Ballet School’s commitment to student care, all students have access to group education and individual assistance with injury prevention and management, body conditioning, healthy nutrition and emotional and physical well-being. Students are encouraged to request assistance from the health team for a variety of reasons such as:

  • to avoid and/or treat injury
  • to maintain general physical and emotional health
  • to improve the mental aspect of dance performance, and
  • to design personalised nutrition plans which maximise energy output and help maintain the lean,
athletic body shape required of classical ballet dancers.

The Australian Ballet School has a reputable and comprehensive team of health professionals to cater for these needs – some team members are employed full-time and others are available for consultations on a weekly basis at The Australian Ballet Centre. Team members genuinely care about our students, often giving of their free time to update and improve service delivery and to consult with parents if required. Services include physiotherapy, psychology, kinetic education, Pilates, dietetics, strength training, rehabilitation coaching (specific to ballet), myotherapy plus general and specialist medical care (some members of the health team also consult with The

The operational practices and standards of the ABS Health Team are the envy of many health professionals consulting to international vocational dance schools. The team has been cited by experts as “world’s best practice” and Rachel Rist (Head of Dance, the Arts Educational School, Tring Park in England), when President of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science, called it ‘the dream team’ (London, 2003).

In 2007 a new role in the team was initiated when classical teacher, Michela Kirkaldie, was appointed to work with students on technical corrections that contribute to injury prevention and also to assist rehabilitating students to transition back into dance classes.

I feel privileged to work with this team and wish to extend to each of them my thanks for their continued commitment to our students. I would also like to officially welcome new team member, Liz Hewett (Exercise Physiologist) who started at the School in early March.
